Wii: Tiger Woods ‘09 finally gets online play, plus better swing mechanics and five new courses

This year’s version of Tiger Woods for the Nintendo Wii should finally address some of the shortcomings of the first two titles. Most notably, you’ll finally be able to play online against three other players. What’s really cool about the online mode is that all four of you will take your shots independently of each other. So you’ll see little trails and shot arcs from your opponents scattered about whichever hole you’re currently playing to signify their shots respective to yours. You won’t, however, have to sit and watch every player hit, so a full four-player round won’t drag on for hours.

Aside from online multiplayer, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 will feature true one-to-one swing mechanics – something that’s been missing from previous years as well. When you pull back on the Wii remote, your player starts his backswing – similar to Wii Sports Golf. It sounds simple, but the first two versions of the game found you completing a swing with the Wii remote and then watching your player swing a few moments later. This version should feel much more realistic.

The game will also feature some revamped graphics (although the above video doesn’t look too drastically different to me – the sounds certainly seem familiar) and five new golf courses: Bay Hill in Orlando, Wentworth in England, Sun City in South Africa, Wolf Creek in Nevada, and Shenshan in Shanghai, China.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 is slated to be released on August, 26th.
