Will Gearbox, Developers Of Borderlands, Make Duke Nukem Forever?

This was cool in the 90s, trust me.

Oh boy, another Duke Nukem story. It seems that the lawsuit between 3D Realms and Take 2 has been settled, and now Duke Nukem Forever is in the capable hands of Gearbox, developer of Borderlands and the Brothers In Arms series. The question is: who could possibly care?

Consider my predicament. I’ve heard about Duke Nukem Forever since 1997, when I first read about it in a game magazine. (Ultra Game Players, I believe.) How can I possibly care about the game in 2010, or 2011, or 2012?

But that’s me, and possibly other people in my age group.

What about some kid who’s 14-year-old today, has only heard of Duke Nukem 3D in passing—THE TOP 10 MOST CONTROVERSIAL GAMES OF THE 90s lists and the like—and isn’t familiar with the constant start-stop of Duke Nukem Forever? To this kid, it’s probably a case of, “Oh, cool, a new shooter. I want it.”

Which is what I assume Gearbox is banking on.

The greatest injustice I can think of is that Gearbox makes a genuinely good game and people ignore it out of spite.

But again, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. If it’s good, it’s good.
