China-based budget Android smartphone maker OnePlus is the latest to pledge to make some of its devices in India.
The move, which is part of the government’s Make In India campaign, follows a similar strategy from rival Xiaomi, which started producing its first device in India — the Redmi 2 Prime — in August.

OnePlus is a relatively new entrant to the mobile hardware space, and it released a competitive, $329 follow-up smartphone this summer. The company has teamed up with Foxconn to crank out production on Indian soil.
Foxconn, the Taiwan-headquartered manufacturer that is most famous for making Apple devices, previously pledged to invest $5 billion in India as part of Make In India, an initiative from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage manufacturing in the country.
India has emerged as an important market for OnePlus. It is one where the company’s attractive phones and competitive pricing resonates well with consumers who are seeking a good device at a price point that won’t break the bank. But the affordable Android bracket in India is packed with tough competitors, including the aforementioned Xiaomi, India’s own Micromax and Samsung, among many others.
